Treatment Approach
Many couples undergoing IVF/ICSI have a period of waiting before their cycle begins; this is the perfect opportunity to pay special attention to ones overall well-being. Since egg and sperm development takes at least 90 to 100 days, the three months before your cycle is an important time. Implementing a healthy diet, proper self-care, Naturopathic Medicine, Chinese herbal medicine and preconception acupuncture treatments optimizes your reproductive health.

A healthy and balanced body will help produce healthy, high quality sperm and eggs.
In the month before your IVF/ICSI cycle, we follow an evidence-based acupuncture protocol to prepare a woman’s body for embryo transfer. Treatments are scheduled 2x/week during the four weeks prior to egg retrieval. Research has shown that acupuncture helps improve the success rate of IVF/ICSI by:
- Improving blood flow to the ovaries and uterus
- Improving response to hormonal stimulation
- Alleviating possible side effects of fertility medications
- Improving the thickness and profusion of blood to the uterine lining
- Calming the uterus to help prepare for and support implantation
- Reducing stress and promoting relaxation
For males with impaired sperm parameters, we recommend regular acupuncture treatments during the three months prior to an IVF/ICSI cycle and then scheduling visits 2x/week for the two weeks prior to your partner’s egg retrieval. These acupuncture treatments may be supplemented by the use of Chinese herbal medicine, dietary/lifestyle counseling and nutritional supplements.
Acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer has been clinically proven to improve the pregnancy rates in IVF patients. Treatments are given pre and post transfer. Our practitioners are available to provide this service on site as requested.
Approximately 5 to 7 days after transfer, a follow-up acupuncture session will help support implantation and aid in relaxation as you wait for you the results of your blood work.
Assisted Reproductive Technologies (A.R.T.)
In the last thirty years, an increasing number of women and men have been seeking fertility enhancement with Assisted Reproductive Technology (A.R.T.). Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is a general term referring to methods used to achieve pregnancy by artificial or partially artificial means. The most common methods used currently are in vitro fertilization (IVF), inter-uterine insemination (IUI), in vitro maturation (IVM), and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
IVF is the technique of letting fertilization of the male and female gametes (sperm and egg) occur outside the female body. The process involves hormonally controlling the ovulatory process, removing ova (eggs) from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a fluid medium. The fertilised egg (zygote) is then transferred to the patient's uterus with the intent to establish a successful pregnancy. Initially IVF was developed to overcome infertility due to problems of the fallopian tube, but recently it has been used to treat other infertility situations as well. However, for IVF to be successful it requires healthy ova, sperm that can fertilise, and a uterus that can maintain a pregnancy. IVF has become the final solution for most fertility problems when other (less expensive) methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed.
ICSI may be beneficial in the case of male factor infertility where sperm counts are very low or failed fertilization occurred with previous IVF attempt(s). ICSI is a more recent development (used since 1992) associated with IVF.

This is used where sperm have difficulty penetrating the egg and in these cases the partner's or a donor's sperm may be used. The ICSI procedure involves a single sperm carefully being injected into the center of an egg using a microneedle.
These sophisticated medical technologies have opened up new possibilities for thousands of couples facing infertility. However, research has shown that these modern therapies may be significantly enhanced when combined with acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicines and/or Naturopathic Medicine.
